Day 10
Our last day came around too quickly. We woke up, did our routine and drove to the carpark for the Devil’s Punchbowl. An awesome waterfall with a short walk. The South Island just made me feel so small and insignificant, probably mostly due to the insanity of the Southern Alps. We got to the lookout and I did my thing, while Monita did hers, keeping track of time because otherwise I’d stay there all day taking photos.
We headed for Christchurch and were on a semi tight schedule to get the camper back to Wilderness HQ in time. So after 5 minutes Monita took over the driving and I carried on taking photos. That was until we reached Castle Hill where the biggest iceberg size rocks were just scattered around some low rolling hills. The landscape just seemed unreal, and one of the biggest rocks had a group of people abseiling down it. Monita stayed in the camper while I ran around like a headless chicken taking photos.
It was a good hour and a bit before we would approach Christchurch and we still had empty all the waste water and fill up the diesel and LPG bottle. I must add campervans are not city friendly! But we managed to get it back in time for Kelsey to pick us up. Saying goodbye to our home on the road was hard but we knew it wouldn’t be the last time we’d see each other!
We took a drive through the Christchurch CBD that is still in a lot of ruins. Photos just don’t portray the extent of what happened, and what’s happening now to fix it. It’s mind boggling. We caught up and re-lived our ten days over dinner before parting ways and getting on the plane back to Auckland.
Tired, but inspired. Ready for the next adventure.
