Day 8
We woke to yet another dreary day. There was one other camper parked at the lake with us. We slept in knowing we were only going to go as far as Greymouth. Every guide book we read said to visit the Hokitika gorge. So off we went, the drive felt quite long and it was hard to imagine where we were going to see a gorge among all the farm land.
The gorge is known for its milky blue hues, but with the rain as heavy as it was, we were presented with a brown river. Still it was cool to go for a little walk. Definitely a spot to return to in summer. We then carried on back to Hokitika to have a famous whitebait pizza, only to find out they had no whitebait left. Monita was highly disappointed and we settled for The Clocktower Café and she still got her whitebait fix.
It was one of those days where I had to do my ‘boy job’. Emptying our waste. With that shit out of the way we powered onto Greymouth to do a tour of the Montieth’s Brewery. We consumed our share of beer, fries and mussels and relaxed in front of the roaring open fire.
As the day was coming to an end we hunted for a spot to park up for night, the beach was beyond windy so we settled for a spot by the river. It wasn’t the nicest part of Greymouth and the houses were very questionable. But there was a house bus parked up in the freedom camping spot so that was us for the night.
