Aaron & Monitas travel blog

Day 6

Our last full day in Iceland. We drove through snow and wind down back towards the ring road and continued west. Along the way I stopped off at a small canyon and got some shots. As we were driving I saw a waterfall out the corner of my eye followed by a large group of horses. Brook and I ran up the hill to the waterfall and the horses followed us, they were inquisitive and so chill.

Next we stopped off at our cabin for the night, checked if it had a stove and an oven and headed north to Stykkishólmur to get supplies. We came back, had lunch and got back on the road for a massive drive around the Snæfellsnes peninsula

First stop was Kirkjufell mountain, a classic photo. Continued to drive around the Snæfellsnes peninsula which in places reminded us again so much of New Zealand. From the road we spotted another waterfall. The viewing spot was really far back but Monita and I crossed some streams and got right up there! As we got around the peninsula to the south side the weather changed dramatically an we were greeted with blue skies. We tried to find a hot tub filled with geothermal water but to no avail, turns out it was a lot closer to Reykjavík. A local told us of tiny hot spring which we then found. But the wind was so vicious and it was too small for us to all get in. We headed back to the Airbnb for dinner, but had one last plan.

Being our last night we made the decision to drove out to the coast as the weather had been good and the sky was void of clouds. We went out at 12:30am and managed to see a very faint showing of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). It was very faint and the camera picked it up a lot better than what the eye could see, but still we were very stoked we got to see them! After quite a few photos it was time to call it a night. 2am, lights out.
