‘The road is long, with many a winding turn, that leads us to who knows where’.
Day 1
For ten days we got to live the dream. Navigating a motorhome that resembled a small bus around the parts of New Zealand that you can’t help but leave a part of your heart in. A short flight from Auckland to Christchurch and it was on, leaving behind clouds for crisp blue skies.
Thanks to Wilderness NZ we were face to face with an almost seven meter behemoth. The most luxurious motor home that I will probably ever step foot in. And now, I will use no other, sorry Jucy. We opted for the all inclusive insurance for that extra piece of mind. After being told how everything works (there’s a lot to take in) we slowly headed to the supermarket for supplies and a quick catch up with friends. Seriously, supermarkets are great for meeting people, you just take up two car parks.
First stop. Lake Tekapo. We took the inland scenic route and had amazing weather. As we approached the Mackenzie basin I handed over the reins to Monita while I photographed from my leather recliner (I mean passenger seat). A few photo stops, one stop for sheep and the sun was heading fast for the horizon. We made it to the lake just in time for enough photos before it was dark. Rookie mistake when trying to find the camp spot for the night. Our camper was certified to be self contained, which meant we could park up wherever freedom camping was allowed. After driving back and forth along the lake in darkness we pulled next to a fellow camper (ended up camping next to Lake Alexandria), cooked up some sausages and called it a night!
