Day 2
We woke up to the sounds of… serenity. A lovely contrast to the rat race that is Auckland. Greeted by the soft light behind the mountains as the sun had started to rise. It was nice to finally see where exactly we had parked the previous night, a few other campers and a lake. Bliss.
A very chilly couple of degrees, clear skies and sun (oh and a hearty breakfast of sausages and eggs!) started the day off as we drove up the access road to Mt. John Observatory. We got there early beating the hordes of people that started to arrive as we left. We took in the views and Monita got her coffee fix, it was all quite literally breathtaking. We headed towards Cromwell and stopped along the way, notably Lake Pukaki and Lindis Pass. The Southern Alps dwarfed us, even in such a large camper!
The weather was perfect, until we approached Cromwell where the cloud started showing face. We met our friend Ross at Mt. Difficulty winery. A bit of wine tasting, followed by the chefs famous Duck and some more Pinot Noir before we said our goodbyes as we headed for Dunedin. It was already getting late so our arrival into Dunedin was dark.
We caught up with Monita’s family before calling it a night in Brighton, totally unassuming of what we were about to wake up to. The camper is awesome, you jump into bed, which is a slat bed with memory foam that rivals mine at home, and you forget that you’re in a camper in the middle of no where.
