Palermo / Sicily

Palermo / Sicily

At some point all good things must come to an end, or at least go in a different direction. Our three month playcation in the snow was over. Our last day in Chamonix was hectic, I feel like we never got a second to really say goodbye. Before we knew it we were half way to Geneva bound for London. A quick week full of life admin, seeing family and friends, wedding shopping and saying goodbye for real this time.

It was then onward to Palermo, Sicily. Time for our brief stint of summer before our back to back winter.

We arrived late, but before bed, pizza.

Despite having had months to plan the next few weeks, we hadn’t done anything. Our default plan of taking things slowly and eating was now in effect. The first half of the day was a walking street food tour that gave us historical insights to culture, architecture and Sicilian life - mixed with local, world renowned dishes. Our first food stop was Mercato il Capo. The market dates back to the times when there was a lot of Muslim influence in the city, something I had no idea about! It is said that the sounds, smells and sights of Mercato il Capo are some of the best preserved of Sicily’s Arab traditions. So it’s no surprise that the famous Arancini is said to have originated in the 10th century in Sicily at a time when the island was under Arab rule.  We also ended up on Italian TV while eating some grilled lamb intestine! We wondered more and learnt about the city and tried Sfincione, Sicilian wine and traditional Cannoli.

We only had one full day in Palermo before heading along the coast to San Vito Lo Copa so after our food/walking tour we headed back for a afternoon snooze before a late afternoon mish for more arancini, more walking and more taking it slow.

I love creating images that speak to me.

I grew up in a small town that nobody really knows about, Levin. Spent a good ten years in Hamilton making some of the best friends anyone could have. And now I’m living, working and playing in the city of Auckland, New Zealand. Also a small country that people have trouble locating – I’m looking at you America!

Life is about stories, and that’s what I love to capture and document. My shooting style is unobtrusive. You may be a natural in front of the camera, or have no idea what to do but before we even start I’ll make sure you’re comfortable and relaxed.

Things I love: Travelling to wherever I can, my partner Monita, homemade burgers, wood fired pizzas, the smell of rain on a hot summers day, mountains, the snow, sunsets and sunrises, star gazing, natural light, the aesthetic of wood, crashing waves and day dreaming.
