The Path of the Gods / Italy
I hadn’t heard of the Path of the Gods until we got to Positano. It’s a hike high above the Amalfi coast and it is named aptly so because the panoramic visits are truly breathtaking, not to mention the many moments of self inducing vertigo.
The hike is not without challenges. Although a relatively easy hike the biggest challenge is actually getting to the trail head in the village of Bomerano using public transport. We where there at the start of May, well over a month before peak season. But it was still very busy. The Buses are run by SITA, and as much as I’d like to curse at their inefficiencies and questioning the point of a timetable when the buses arrive and depart so randomly - it is surely the mass influx of people causing the transport infrastructure to crumble. Learn extreme patience, for your sanity.
Side note - if you are prone to car sickness the winding narrow roads with shear drops, then I’m sorry.
I would recommend getting to trail head as early as possible. From Positano you must take a bus to Amalfi, then another bus to Bomerano. It took us two hours to reach the trailhead, lucky for us it was a ‘bearable’ 23 degrees and overcast. The trailhead is at an elevation of around 700m and the trail dips between 500-700m with clear views across the coast and the Bay of Naples.
Follow the signs posted for Sentiero deli Dei and just keep walking. There are many view points and the path is clearly marked by white and red signs with a 02 written on them. Although you can do the walk in either direction I suggest starting from Bomerano as the views are better as you approach Nocelle (where the walk ends, upper part of Positano) and you don’t have to start the walk with the 1500 steps at the end!
I love creating images that speak to me.
I grew up in a small town that nobody really knows about, Levin. Spent a good ten years in Hamilton making some of the best friends anyone could have. And now I’m living, working and playing in the city of Auckland, New Zealand. Also a small country that people have trouble locating – I’m looking at you America!
Life is about stories, and that’s what I love to capture and document. My shooting style is unobtrusive. You may be a natural in front of the camera, or have no idea what to do but before we even start I’ll make sure you’re comfortable and relaxed.
Things I love: Travelling to wherever I can, my partner Monita, homemade burgers, wood fired pizzas, the smell of rain on a hot summers day, mountains, the snow, sunsets and sunrises, star gazing, natural light, the aesthetic of wood, crashing waves and day dreaming.
