Day 3
We had another early start as we had another busy day of things to see. Our first stop was the Fjaðrárgljúfur. A magnificent and massive canyon, about 100 meters deep and about two kilometres long with sheer walls, and is somewhat serpentine and narrow. The bedrock in Fjaðrárgljúfur is mostly palagonite from cold periods of the Ice Age and is thought to be about two million years old - epic! The weather was the best we'd had since arriving in Iceland, clear blue skies, but a bone chilling wind.
After the canyon, we had a couple of stops on the road before heading to Svartifoss. Our new good friend Keegan and his partner Liv had joined us for the day to get some 'couple shots' of Mon and I. He had already seen the waterfall but suggested another spot that was quieter. To the right of the track is another track to leads right up to Skaftafellsjökull glacier and its lake, complete with floating ice bergs. A scene so perfect I just had to get on one knee and propose! I was hoping for some moody overcast weather, and as we got to the lake it started to snow!
The next stop was Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond beach. There is a massive lagoon just filled with ice bergs, if you're lucky you'll see seals jumping from the icebergs and swimming around. As the tide takes the smaller bits out they end up back on shore. Very cool. From there we made our way up to Hofn, grabbed food supplies and checked into another awesome cabin. An early night with pizza, chips and fresh trout. Lights out.
