Auschwitz / Poland
I wrote this post with the heaviest of hearts. And no amount of words can come close to describing the feeling of visiting the sites of one of societies greatest downfalls.
Our first stop was Aushwitz I where our guide took us through various barracks that were now memorials and museum like sections that gave insight into the atrocities that happened there. One of the saddest moments for me was walking out the same door the prisoners had to walk out towards the execution wall, and where the barrack opposite had the windows boarded up so those inside had no knowledge of what was happening.
Our next stop was Aushwitz II-Birkenau, one of the largest concentration camps built by the Nazis. It’s estimated that 1.1million were killed there. Although we walked around, you could see the barracks that housed the prisons stretch on for what seemed forever. It’s worth checking out aerial shots to see the scale of the camp. It was definitely one of the most saddening experiences we’ve ever had, it’s just so hard to comprehend how much hate the nazi (scum) had against fellow human beings. And sadly, almost 80 years on there are still cases of genocide.
I love creating images that speak to me.
I grew up in a small town that nobody really knows about, Levin. Spent a good ten years in Hamilton making some of the best friends anyone could have. And now I’m living, working and playing in the city of Auckland, New Zealand. Also a small country that people have trouble locating – I’m looking at you America!
Life is about stories, and that’s what I love to capture and document. My shooting style is unobtrusive. You may be a natural in front of the camera, or have no idea what to do but before we even start I’ll make sure you’re comfortable and relaxed.
Things I love: Travelling to wherever I can, my partner Monita, homemade burgers, wood fired pizzas, the smell of rain on a hot summers day, mountains, the snow, sunsets and sunrises, star gazing, natural light, the aesthetic of wood, crashing waves and day dreaming.
